two possible reasons
first is to attract attention of others who might be able to help you and to alert others of eminent danger.
second is to release the intense energy built up in your body at the precise moment of onset of fear.
But I would also agree with a previous comment. When someone is truly scared, they experience a sudden inability to produce any sound at all. At that moment it becomes more about survival and the mind is trying to figure out a way out.Why is it our natural instinct to scream when we are struck with terror?
Speak for yourself. There are many who simply get dumbstruck.
Shocked into a frozen state. Eyes like that of a deer reflecting headlights.
I think people react differently.
Children are natural screamers so the scream is a normal extension of their natural ability to call their parents. Why is it our natural instinct to scream when we are struck with terror?
I think screaming is designed as a call for help.
Like the first guy said..... but also maybe the scream could scare the predator away?
Wow. That is a good question. I don't have the slightest clue.
Edit: Actually Antihero makes a very good point. I would put my money on that.
I think the reason is because when we are pain somewhere, we want to not think about that pain. So, the best way is to use our mouth as a fight against it. In other words, you quench your teeth together, you scream, or you bite your tongue so you don't feel the other pain that might or did happen to you.
Obviously, if a criminal robs your house, and you scream, you are doing it to tell other people something is going on.
Screaming is a defense against a predator that may be scared away, and it gets the attention of others so they can see the danger and help or escape.
If we are struck with true terror...then we do not scream.
It's an emotional outburst from adrenalin rushing through your body...
